Explained for every age
For kids (7–11)
Your health does not depend only on your body: it also depends on the air you breathe, the water you drink, the soil where your food grows and the animals you live with. When we take care of the planet, we also take care of ourselves.
For teens (12–16)
Environmental health studies how our surroundings affect our health. If the air, water or soil become polluted, health problems can appear; for example, some air pollutants can trigger asthma attacks. Some risks are natural, like radon gas that comes out of the ground, and others come from human activities, like the lead or mercury used in mining and industry. The idea of "One Health" proposes that the health of people, the health of animals and the health of the environment are connected and must be cared for together.
Pre-Med (17+)
The One Health approach promotes collaboration among several disciplines, at local, national and global scale, to achieve the best possible health for people, animals and the environment; it arose from evidence of the spread of zoonotic diseases between species and of the interdependence between human health, animal health and ecological change. Environmental health analyzes exposures (air, water, soil, food, climate) and their effects, considering the dose, the route of entry and susceptibility: children, older adults and people with chronic diseases are more vulnerable. Exposures are not evenly distributed; in Chile people speak of "zonas de sacrificio" (sacrifice zones) to refer to territories with a high concentration of polluting industries, such as Quintero and Puchuncaví.
